The critical edition of Le siège de Corinthe opens the ROF 2017
8 August 2017

The XXXVIII edition of the Rossini Opera Festival will open with Le siège de Corinthe (to be performed at the Adriatic Arena on the 10th, 13th, 16th and 19th August at 7.00 p.m.).  The opera will be performed for the first time ever in the critical edition edited by Damien Colas on behalf of the Fondazione Rossini.  In comparison with the score printed by Troupenas in 1826, and upon which all performances of Le siege have been based, the new critical edition restores the original opera as it was given on its first performance, with the addition of passages that had been cut out of the opera even before they had been orchestrated.

Composed for the Paris Opéra in 1826 and meeting with enormous success, the score is a radical re-working of Maometto II, which had been written six years earlier for the San Carlo, Naples.

The staging is the work of Carlus Padrissa, of the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus, together with the painter and video artist Lita Cabellut..  For La Fura, this is their début at the Pesaro festival and also their first step into the Rossini repertoire.

The idea behind the staging is War, a constant presence in the history of humanity, during the course of which we continually fight for mixed motives: power, money, land, space.  In this production the element for which they are fighting is water, symbolized by walls of plastic bottles heaped up on the stage.  The story is set in an arid and salty land, the setting is deliberately without any particular  epoch and the costumes worn by the two peoples (Greeks and Turks) differ only in the splashes of blood on those worn by the Turks.

Robberto Abbado will conduct the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale of the RAI, performing in Pesaro for the first time, with the Chorus of the Teatro Ventidio Basso.  In the cast, beside Nino Machaidze, Luca Pisaroni, John Irvin, Sergey Romanovsky and Carlo Cigni will all be making their Pesaro débuts, together with young singers from recent sessions of the Accademia Rossiniana such as Xabier Anduaga, Iurii Samoilov and Cecilia Molinari.

The first performance of the opera, on the 10th August at 7.00 p.m., will be broadcast live on RaiRadioTre and on Euroradio.
