Bianca e Falliero

The festival will open on 7th August at Auditorium Scavolini, a newly inaugurated venue within the well-known PalaFestival and this year’s opening performance will be Bianca e Falliero, an opera that has not been staged at ROF since 2005.

Roberto Abbado will conduct the Rai National Symphony Orchestra and the Chorus of Teatro Ventidio Basso. The cast includes Jessica Pratt (Bianca), Aya Wakizono (Falliero), Dmitry Korchak (Contareno), Giorgi Manoshvili (Capellio), Nicolò Donini (Priuli), Carmen Buendía (Costanza), Dangelo Díaz (Cancelliere) and Claudio Zazzaro (Ufficiale/Usciere). The production will be directed by Jean-Louis Grinda, with sets and costumes by Rudy Sabounghi and lighting by Laurent Castaingt. The three performances will take place on 11th, 14th and 19th August.

Bianca e Falliero, a melodrama in two acts with a libretto by Felice Romani, was first performed in Milan on 26th December 1819 at Teatro alla Scala. The singers were Alessandro de Angeli (Priuli), Claudio Bonoldi (Contareno), Giuseppe Fioravanti (Capellio), N.N. (Loredano), Carolina Bassi (Falliero), Violante Camporesi (Bianca), Adelaide Ghinzani (Costanza) and Francesco Biscottini (Cancelliere). The autograph manuscript is preserved in the Casa Ricordi archives. The opera’s subject is based on Blanche et Montcassin (1798) by A. V. Arnhault.
