Piazza del Popolo, 61121 Pesaro (PU)
Accessible for the disabled
The square is bordered on four sides by the Post Office and the Ducal, Bavarian and City palaces. In the centre is the fountain, restored in 1960 to replace the 17th century fountain destroyed in 1944. The square is located at the intersection of the cardo (Via San Francesco and Corso XI Settembre), which coincides with the urban section of the consular road Flaminia, and the decumanus (Via Branca and Via Rossini) of the original Roman city, of which it was the forum. The original layout of Pisaurum (184 B.C.) was made up of orthogonal axes corresponding to the two main roads that meet in the square. Since the Middle Ages it has been the political and administrative centre of the city.
